Opening Reception | Human // Not-So-Human

"Human // Not-So-Human” is an interdisciplinary BFA group exhibition that explores what it means to be human. Featuring drawing, painting, photography, and experimental printmaking, the exhibiting artists invite you to discover their diverse and unique perspectives on what defines humanness (as well as not-so-humanness) - whether it be the mundane, magical, or monstrous. While some contextualize their humanity through introspection and interpersonal connection, others use external sources such as the natural world. Artists Twoise Chee, Lindsay Lafon, Morgan Maxfield, Mia Moore, Nate Sententia, and Gillian Welch raise the question: Are you human? About the Artists: Twoise Chee is a monochromatic illustrator that primarily works with pen and ink to depict fantastical scenes. Visual storytelling is a key component of Twoise’s body of work as he leads the viewer's eye through outlandish and mysterious landscapes inhabited by figures and drenched in mark-making. History’s tangibility and the lessons therein are a focus in his work, alongside the interactions between humans and the natural world. Lindsay Lafon is a visual artist who draws attention to the nature and beauty of humans and animals through oil painting and drawing mediums. In her work, she utilizes different types of mark-making and perspectives to capture the essence of the subject and depict seemingly insignificant aspects of life in ways that make them noteworthy and celebrated. Morgan Maxfield is a multimedia artist and printmaker who pushes the limits of print. From inky illustration to sculptural bookmaking, they treat each medium as an experiment. Morgan’s bold, interdisciplinary work features paper, paint, and everything they can get their hands on to discuss feelings of otherness, isolation, and sensitivity in a society that prioritizes strength and conformity. Mia Moore is a digital photographer who has also been experimenting with alternative process photography to further convey her narrative. Her work deals with ideas of family, love, and loss, using those main ideas to capture her subjects in the most genuine light. She pairs these more traditional images with lumen prints and cyanotypes of flowers to show the fragility and beauty of life. Nate Sententia is a visual artist whose work aims to capture the psychic terror of modern human existence. Through expressive painting and surrealist-inspired visuals, his works deal with issues of technology, spirituality, and cultural dualities. Inspired by his perpetual nightmares, his compositions utilize eye-popping colors, grotesquely beautiful figures, and a maddening attention to detail, to challenge the conventions of our collective consciousness. Gillian Welch is a multimedia artist who challenges the conventional expectations of what art can be. Gillian utilizes texture, color, and form to express who they are as an artist. No matter the medium or the subject, each piece of their work uniquely expresses the conversation they have with themselves.
